Description:  The series of 1878 is just another two dollar legal tender note from the 1869 to 1917 period that get that gets very little attention.  Yes, these notes are common.  And yes, once again, 1878 twos do have a portrait of Thomas Jefferson.  However, there is a rare variety to this series, as described in the variety section.

(1878 two dollar bills always have red seals and serial numbers)

Variations:  If there was a cherry pickers guide for currency, this issue would be in it.  The series of 1878 two dollar bill is the only denomination from the 1878 series for which there are two different signature combinations.  Both notes have the same design.  However, some were signed by Allison and Gilfillian and some were signed by Scofield and Gilfillian.  The Scofield and Gilfillian signature combination is rare.
