Description:  This $5 Confederate note shows a seated woman (Commerce) in flowing robes in the center and a sailor in the lower left corner. This note was printed with black ink on either plain or watermarked paper. There is no design on the back.

The backs of these issues are blank, but they could be stamped or inscribed
Inscriptions: “Six Months after the Ratification of a Treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States, The Confederate States of America will pay Five Dollars to bearer/ Richmond, VA September 2, 1861/ Receivable in Payment of all dues except Export Dues/ Fundable in Confederate States Stock bearing Eight per cent Interest/ J.T. Paterson & Co. Columbia, SC”
