Description:  1878 and 1880 silver certificates have a very similar design, because of that this one page will cover both issues.  It is currently thought that only one 1878 $500 silver certificate has survived.  1880 $500 silver certificates are slightly more common.  Right now there are seven serial numbers recorded as either held by collectors or museums.

The portrait on the right hand side of the bill is that of Charles Sumner.  If you are lucky enough to have a $500 silver certificate, then please tell us about it.  We would love to make a six figure offer.
