Description: 1878 is the first year that twenty dollar silver certificates were issued. Not many were printed and the ones that did get issued were in demand and changed hands frequently. As a result of the small printing and heavy use, all 1878 $20 silver certificates are scarce and valuable.
There is a portrait of Stephen Decatur on the right hand side of the bill. Each bill has paper that is two-toned. Most of the printing on 1878 $20 bills is black. However, there are two red overprints and the serial numbers are blue. Please contact us if you have a silver certificate from 1878. You will likely be very pleased with our appraisal. |
