Description:  1882 twenty dollar bills as shown below are called brown backs by collectors.  They are called brown backs because the back of each note is mostly brown.  The back of each note will also have a number written on it.  The number has to be below 6100.  The number is known as the charter number, it does not affect value.  The value of brown backs is based on the bank of issue and condition.  If the serial number in the lower left area is 1, then expect a nice premium.

The $20 bill below is from Carlisle, Kentucky.  However, your bill could be from just about any bank and any town.  Notes from smaller towns will typically be more valuable than notes from big cities like New York or Boston, etc.  No matter what you have, send us a picture of it and we can give you our opinion.

Variations:  If your note is signed by Rosecrans and Morgan then you have a rare signature combination.  However, even if your twenty dollar bill is signed by someone else, it could still be valuable.  99% of collectors focus on bank of issue and serial numbers.  Signatures are important to almost no one.  Value is all about rarity.
