Description:  Most twenty dollar bills from 1881 or earlier will be rare and collectible.  There are some exceptions to that rule, but only a few.  Not only are $20 bills from this time period valued by national bank note collectors, all collectors of United States currency compete for notes like this because they are genuinely rare.  Just the artwork alone attracts people.  The back of each twenty dollar bill shows the Baptism of Pocahontas.

Twenty dollar bills like below can come with either a red seal as shown below.  Or they can have a spiked red seal (not shown).  Some notes will have a red charter number printed on them, others will not.  The paper and even the serial number colors can change.  There are many different aspects to these notes that affect their value.  Please contact us with an image of what you have.

Variations:  There are several rare signature combinations for twenty dollar bills printed for national banks before 1882.  You can contact us for details on what is rare.  Despite the potential for rare signature combinations, most national bank notes from this time period get their value from the bank of issue.  So just because you have a common signature combination does not mean that your note will be common.
