Description:  Series of 1890 five dollar treasury notes are generally tough to find.  All $5 bills feature a portrait of Thomas.  George H Thomas is the bearded man known as “the Rock of Chicamauga.”

Series of 1890 and Series of 1891 five dollar treasury notes looks very similar to each other.  However, series of 1890 $5 bills are much more valuable, especially in high grades.  The easiest way to distinguish the two is by looking at the back of the bill.  Series of 1890 treasury notes have a deep rich green back.

Keep in mind that all serial number on series of 1890 bills end with a star symbol.  A star symbol in a serial number traditionally adds value, but that only applies to much later issues.
