Description:  National bank notes can be very rare and they can be very valuable.  However, they can also be very common and inexpensive.  The value of a five dollar first charter national bank note is purely dependent upon three things:

1) Bank of Issue (ex First National Bank of Any Town, Any State)
2) Serial Number in the lower left area (if it is 1, then the note is more valuable)
3) Condition of the bill

Rather than try to explain all the variables in pricing a national bank note, please just send us a picture of what you have instead.  You will likely be very pleased with the value.

The artwork on first charter national bank notes is very detailed and busy.  There are three different scenes of action, including The Landing of Columbus, 1492.

Variations:  There are two different types of first charter five dollar national bank notes.  There are original series notes and then there are series of 1875 notes.  Series of 1875 say “series of 1875” – original series notes only have a charter date.  Series of 1875 notes also have a charter.  The charter date on can be anywhere from 1862 to 1882.

Some first charter fives will not have a red charter number stamped on it.  There will also be differences on the back of the note where the state seal is.

Basically, these five dollar bills are complicated to explain via a webpage.  Send us an email and tell us what you have.
