Five dollar bills with red seals and red ink serial numbers can be from one of three years:
Each of these red seal fives can have series years with subset suffix letters like series of 1928F, series of 1953B, series of 1963, etc. Collectors call notes like these red seal fives. More specifically they are known as legal tender notes or United States notes. Each red seal five dollar bill obviously has a red seal and they also have serial numbers which are printed in red ink.
1928 red writing five dollar bills are different from 1953 and 1963 red seal five dollars because of the red seal placement. 1928 fives have the red seal on the left hand side of the note and 1953 and 1963 fives have the red seal on the right hand side of the note. All of these notes have Abraham Lincoln as the center portrait and they have the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the bill surrounded by a dark green printing. You can also find the following phrases:
“United States Note, The United States of America, This Note Is A Legal Tender At Its Face Value For All Debts Public And Private, Will Pay To The Bearer On Demand Five Dollars” 1928 and 1928A red writing fives have slightly different wordings.
All red seal five dollar bills were printed in Washington DC and signed by the Treasury of The United States and The Secretary of The Treasury. Sadly, most red seal fives are only worth a small percentage over face value. However, there are certainly some exceptions in the 1928 series.
